Viewing tidal streams

The Tidal Streams page will load with a base map depending on your chosen hemisphere (see The Hemisphere Toggle). You will see an empty 'select date' box. 

Choosing the date

Clicking on 'the date box will produce an interactive calendar, with the month displayed at the top. Left (<) and Right (>) buttons will appear either side of the month so that you can move through the year. To select a date for the month displayed, simply click or tap on the number. 

This will then draw tidal streams for 1200 on the selected date, and a slider will appear to the right of/below the (on smaller screens) date box. 

Using the slider

Dragging the round 'handle' on the slider by clicking and holding with your mouse, or dragging it with a finger on a touch device, will change the set and drift depicted in the tidal arrows. The time will be displayed below the slider, along with the relevant time zone for the hemisphere you have selected. Please note that you may need to convert the times given to adjust for daylight saving time or into other time zones depending on the scenario you are working through. If in doubt, check with your instructor.

Showing the Set & Drift

If you move your mouse cursor over any tidal arrow, or tap on a touch device, a call-out tooltip will appear showing the direction (in True) and rate (in knots) of the tidal stream based on your selected date/time. The locations are approximate, however they do correspond to tidal diamonds on the RYA Training Charts and tidal vectors in the RYA Training Almanac. 

Identfying specfic tidal stream station

Below is a key to uniquely identify each tide station within the RYA training world. These are referenced in the exercise questions to assist you finding the correct station. Thos with a prefix of 'TS' only exist within the tidal stream atlas in the Training Alamanac or the enavigation website. Those prefixed by numbers exist also exist in tidal diamond tables in the relveant Training Charts, for example 35B idenfies Tidal Diamond B on chratsa 3 and 5.
